This year we changed the location of our math centre and already notice how many more children are choosing to go there. Of course, we consider our whole classroom a place to learn mathematics but this area is a place where we store our mathematics materials.


Last year the mathematics centre was located beside the dramatic play centre and the children often used the mathematics manipulatives as props in their dramatic play. This year we made the manipulatives more accessible and are trying to have them use them in different ways.

We will leave bins of specific materials out as a follow up to large or small group lesson. Already we have observed groups of children who choose to use certain materials e.g., dominoes- matching numbers and noticing the patterns. The children are also choosing their own materials and are spending more time in this centre.
